Notes
  • Animation.
  • Title at head of reel: Opus 2, 3, 4.
  • Running time: 7:40.
  • Film begins with the modern title: WALTER RUTTMANN Opus 2, 3,4; then an introductory note in German appears. After this statement, there is a short abstract animation sequence by Ruttmann, and then Ruttmann's original title for Opus II announces the beginning of that work. Opus III and Opus IV also are preceded by Ruttman's original titles.
  • Ruttmann's titles date Opus III from 1924, and Opus IV from 1925.
  • Introductory note reads: "Mit den seinerzeit farbig hergestellten OPUS-Filmen kehrt Ruttmann zur filmischen Urforn zurück. Hierzu erklärte er selbst: 'Man soll sich dabei gar nichts denken.'" (With the original-color OPUS films, Ruttmann returns to the primal form of cinema. In this regard he explains, "They do not require thought.")
  • All four Opus films were originally shown with a score by the Swedish composer Max Butting. The original score, which includes Ruttmann's sketches to guide synchronization, is in the Swedish Film Archive.
  • PFA 1604-01-3225. Restricted: For PFA exhibition only.

On PFA accession card: Sadoul. 946 PFA 1604-01-3225. Written descriptions of Opus I note that it indeed bore resemblance to the other pieces, and a still frame from the film reprinted in Experimental Animation: Origins of a New Art, by Robert Russett and Cecille Starr, is from the opening and closing sequences discussed above. It is worth observing, however, that Leonhard Adelt's review of the original Opus I, from it's premiere screening in 1921, notes that the film included titles which are absent from the present work. 946 PFA 1604-01-3225. Staff at PFA believe that this reel holds Opus I as well as II-IV, although it should be noted that the film's modern title does not acknowledge this. Opus I was believed lost for many years, and then discovered in a European archive. Cataloger suspects that a short animated sequence preceding Opus II is what is believed to be Opus I. The sequence in question includes visual themes similar to some used in Opus II and Opus III. Also, Opus IV concludes with a theme employed at the very beginning of the opening sequence. 948 PFA 1604-01-3225.
