New American Filmmakers series, 39: Shirley Clarke,|cPacific Film Archive People file: Shirley Clarke 511 0 With: Jason Holliday. 520 The subject and constant object of this film is male prostitute Jason Holliday giving a stream-of-consciousness "confession" of his life. He performs a pas de deux with the process of making the film: questions from the director and crew are heard, the crew laughs with him at his jokes, at times the camera runs out of film but the sound continues, with black leader replacing the picture. The film itself was shot over a twelve-hour period. Jason recounts tales from his life that define his identity. He describes how he changed his name to change his identity; work he held in the past as a houseboy to wealthy people; his homosexuality and the gay subculture in San Francisco and New York; visits to a psychiatrist; his love for alcohol; his aspiration to be a nightclub entertainer. He gives examples of his nightclub act, imitating female entertainers and movie roles such as Mae West and Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the wind. Towards the end, he is accused by an off-screen voice of being a liar. This brings him to tears, pleading to be loved. The filmmaker's voice ends the film by saying "The end." 590 PFA 1616-01-2784. |aCONDITION NOTE: Film-to-tape transfer: 06 Nov 1997; dirty; Very good condition; light lines and scratches throughout; print is fairly dirty; no vinegar odor at this time CONDITION NOTE: Inspected: 24 Oct 1992; scratches; Good condition; reel 1 (734 ft. 37 fr.): bad scratches at head of reel and periodically throughout; continuous scratch at right of frame; reel 2 (1563 ft. 33 fr.): continuous scratch at right of frame; reel 3 (1534 ft.): bad continuous scratch CONDITION NOTE: Last inspected: 2008/01/25; Very good to excellent condition; A -D level 1; slight warping at head; very light scratches 600 10 Holliday, Jason. 650 0 Male homosexuality. 650 0 Male prostitution. 655 7 Features.|2mim 655 7 Cinma vrit.|2mim 655 7 Cinéma vérité.|2mim 655 7 Documentaries and factual works|2mim 655 7 Personal/independent films.|2mim 690 U.S. films. 690 Women filmmakers. 700 1 Clarke, Shirley,|d1919-1997. 700 1 Sapanen, Jeri. 700 1 Daniel, Francis. 700 1 Fiore, Robert. 700 1 Hubbard, Jim. 700 1 Holliday, Jason. 935 GLADN50874389 941 0 PFA 1616-01-2784.
