520 "The film combines live-action sequences and animation to
depict a surreal search for a nice ripe juicy orange. Set
in the context of a small child's dream, the story follows
a stuffed dog brought to life by a mother's tear, and a
Devil who springs from the alcoholic vapors of a
drunkard's delirium. The heady decadence of Bohemian
nightlife in the Thirties is celebrated in curious and
grotesque puppets fashioned from the refuse of the gutters
of Paris. At midnight, the garbage swirls to life and
shoe-chariots deliver eggshell, broomstraw, excelsior, and
vegetable creatures to a Devil's Ball. The party includes
an amnorous woolen monkey, a balloon saxophonist, waltzing
chicken skeletons, and whirling tipsy wineglasses." --
David Craig.
