While the fatalism of the novel is apparently toned down this remains an atmospheric study of the effects of oppressive economic and social conditions on individual lives in Beijing of the 1920's. It is about a young man's attempt to earn a living pulling a rented rickshaw with the aim of becoming independent by earning enough to buy his own rickshaw. He is trapped into an ill matched marriage with the daughter of the agency boss and strikes up a friendship with his neighbour, a young woman who has been sold into prostitution by her father. 530 DVD version;|bChina Century Entertainment, 2004. 541 0 |3PFA 3500-01-14654. |a D0204 |c donation |d 2010/09/30 |5CBPF 546 Mandarin dialogue, English subtitles. 650 0 Rickshaw men|zBeijing (China)|xsocial conditions. 655 7 Feature films.|2lcgft 700 1 Ling, Zifeng,|efilm director. 700 1 Huang, Zhaoyi,|efilm producer. 700 1 Zhang, Fengui,|eactor 700 0 Siqingaowa,|d1949-|eactor. 700 1 Lao, She,|d1899-1966.|tLuo tuo Xiangzi.|lEnglish. 710 2 Beijing dian ying zhi pian chang. 956 20170210 |bpfmcq|cCO 957 OCLC xref loaded 20170219 994 C0|bCUY
