As it is, Yūko is already engaged to Masao, a young student who has been flirting with one of Yūko's friends, Miki. This engagement is by family arrangement and Yūko does not feel affected by the custom's implications. Further, she is of a farming family and herself attends the local agricultural school. Ryūji is the son of a fisherman and attends the rival fishery school. A union between a farmer and fisherman is therefore unlikely. 520 8 Ryūji's father, an aging drunk, urges his son to marry Yūko. He believes that if the destiny is not fulfilled, bad luck will come to them. He reminds his son that his elder brother died after refusing to marry the girl who wiped his back at a similar festival years ago. He visits Yūko and her family and asks them to allow the marriage. His efforts fail. Yūko and Ryūji begin to fall in love nevertheless, which incites the anger of their peers and fuels the rivalries between the two schools and the two working groups. The rivalry increases when both schools enter a local camera contest. Yūko and Ryūji are both named finalists but decline the position, not wishing to compete with each other. 546 In Japanese with English subtitles. 590 PFA 3500-01-4078. |aCONDITION NOTE: Described: 1976; Good condition; color good; subtitles satisfactory CONDITION NOTE: Last checked (trailer only): 2009/07/27; Color is fading to magenta; needs leader 650 0 Honor|vDrama. 650 0 Love|vDrama. 650 0 Marriage|xCourtship|vDrama. 650 0 Self-sacrifice|vDrama. 650 0 Rape|vDrama. 655 7 Features.|2mim 655 7 Melodrama.|2mim 690 Japanese films. 700 1 Manabe, Yoshihiko. 700 1 Yuasa, Noriaki,|d1933-2004. 700 1 Takahashi, Fumi. 700 1 Kitazaki, Akira. 700 1 Yano, Tomohisa. 700 1 Kikuchi, Shunsuke. 700 1 Okuyama, Hideo. 700 1 Kuboe, Heihachi. 700 1 Miyazaki, Yoshiyuki. 700 1 Kobayashi, Masao. 700 1 Sekine, Keiko. 700 1 Yanami, Eiko. 700 1 Shinoda, Saburō. 700 1 Onogawa, Saburō. 700 1 Hayakawa, Tamotsu. 700 1 Sugano, Naoyuki. 700 1 Akaza, Miyoko. 700 1 Ban, Junzaburo. 710 2 Daiē, Kabushiki Kaisha. 935 GLADN50871509 941 0 PFA 3500-01-4078. 35 mm., 946 PFA 3500-01-4078.
