500 Audie Bock comments that "Masumura's 43rd film is a remake
of Yoshimura Kōzaburō's (q.v.) 1953 Daiei failure, using
the same script. This literary adaptation was undoubtedly
thrown together upon announcement of Kawabata's receipt of
the Nobel Prize, and it transforms the subtly perverse
eroticism and refined interpersonal cruelty of the novel
into heavy-handed melodrama."
