Notes
  • Release date: 01/11/1961.
  • Literal title translation: Shakyamuni.
  • Audie Bock notes that this is "The first 70mm film produced in Japan, employing all the latest technical advances and an all-star cast. Misumi's 27th film, and his first release of two in 1961, has the ponderous pacing and didactic quality often associated with similar Christian religious epics. The major interest of the story, which reduces the life of the Buddha to the melodramas of those around him, is to be found in the superb special effects and color. A guest star performance by Charito Solis of the Philippines is also noteworthy. Cut, dubbed version released in the U.S. by Lopert Pictures."
  • Pacific Film Archive collection; non-circulating. CBPF.
