500 One of a series of films entitled Traditional dances of
Indonesia (Tari-tarian tradisionil di Indonesia) sponsored
by Pertamina, Caltex Pacific Indonesia, Bechtel Inc.,
Jakarta, and produced by Film Forms International, San
Francisco.
500 Subtitled Dances of West Sumatra (Tarian dari Sumatera
Barat) Performed in the Minangkabau region of West Sumatra,
in April, 1975.
500 The literal translation of Alang Suntiang Penghulu is
eagle-like splendor of the Adat chiefs. Its movements
incorporate symbolic reflection of nature woven together
with pentjak silat (stylized form of self-defense) Both
dances have a secular ceremonial function and are
performed only by men.
506 Pacific Film Archive collection; non-circulating. Access
by appt. only.|5CBPF.
520 Originally danced with cocoanut shells, the Tari Piring
now incorporates plates and dishes into its structure. It
"embodies a graceful strength likened to the flight of
eagles"; movements from everyday life are also woven into
the dance. The unifying idea of the dance is
"invulnerability gained through calm self-possession."
