  • Akiko Mikumo remarks "Kinugasa's 102nd film was made near the end of his long career. While the elaborate architectural settings, decorative costumes, formal acting, and white makeup and blackened teeth were intended to evoke the sensuous, rich mood of the Heian Court life, they instead give the film a storybook picturesqueness that reduces the actors to ornaments. Hasegawa Kazuo and Ichikawa Raizō give fine performances, but Yamamoto Fujiko , Kinugasa's favorite actress at the time, was unable to convey the subtle emotions beneath the controlled stylization of this Kabuki-like film."
