  • Audie Bock explains that "Misumi's 17th film is one in a long line of remakes of the old Kabuki horror story. Previous well-known film versions include Kinoshita Keisuke's 1949 film for Shōchiku and Toyoda Shirō's 1965 Tōhō release. A standard summer-time genre, and Misumi's third of five films directed in 1959, it is distinguished mostly as a star vehicle for Hasegawa, Daiei's long- standing matinee idol."
