Notes
  • Release date: 04/23/1956.
  • Literal title translation: Story of the last chrysanthemum.
  • Akiko Mikumo remarks "A remake of Mizoguchi's 1939 classic, this film is the 52nd work of the director Shima Kōji who was originally an actor himself. While Hasegawa would appear to be the perfect choice for the role, he is unable to convey either Kikunosuke's love for Otoku or his dedication to Kabuki. Awashima Chikage overdoes her humility and selfless devotion, giving an impression of a pathetic melodramatic woman. The backstage scenes of the Kabuki Theatre are accurate and the film examines the strong Japanese tradition that combines family loyalty with artistic devotion, all bound by rigid feudal customs."
  • Pacific Film Archive collection; non-circulating. CBPF.
