Responsibilities

The Director of the BAMPFA Film Library and Study Center directs all aspects of the Film Library and Study Center, including planning, developing, and implementing services and systems; writing and administering grants; and managing staff, collections, operating budgets, and Library activities. The BAMPFA Film Library and Study Center houses the largest collections of film studies materials in Northern California and serves a broad community of UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff as well as international scholars, researchers, and film enthusiasts. Its collections include over 10,000 books, 6,500 serials volumes, 60,000 still photographs, 10,800 posters, 3,300 audio recordings, and 250,000 documents including reviews, correspondence, press materials, manuscript and special collections, and other documentation. The Film Library also catalogs and provides study access to BAMPFA’s film and video collection and manages digital assets for the institution as a whole.

  • Determines and implements operating policies, principles and practices for the Film Library and Study Center. Develops short- and long-term strategies and plans for the library and for BAMPFA’s digital asset management program, including developing and administering annual budgets.
  • Participates in offsite collection storage planning.
  • Recruits, trains, supervises, and evaluates Film Library staff members responsible for carrying out all library activities including: reference and instructional services, cataloging, collection development, acquisitions, indexing, digital asset creation and management, and access to the library, film, and video collections. Supervises two professional career staff members and grant-funded positions. Oversees the recruitment and hiring of 5-10 student employees, and delegates responsibility for training and supervision of student employees to appropriate staff.
  • Identifies and cultivates fundraising prospects to support projects such as library collection digitization and access; writes major grants to agencies such as NEH and IMLS as well as to private foundations; contributes to grants in support of general operating expenses. Manages funded programs and reports to the funders.
  • Develops, provides, and directs library staff in providing reference and instructional services to staff, faculty, students, and the public. Offers library orientations and teaches information literacy skills. Works with faculty to offer and enhance services to campus constituencies. Fosters a collaborative work environment and a commitment to providing consistent high-quality reference and public service, incorporating up-to-date resources and technologies.
  • Manages research screening facilities which accommodate 8mm, super 8mm, 16mm, and 35mm film, all videotape formats, and digital formats. Coordinates research use of Theater 2. Plans and analyzes equipment needs, and purchases equipment to ensure compatibility with current and obsolete media formats.
  • Develops library collections in support of BAMPFA’s research needs, as well as the film studies research needs of the Campus community and beyond. Develops a vision and plan for the Film Library’s long-term collection program. Works with donors to build library collections; handles donation paperwork.
  • Directs cataloging of all Film Library collections as well as of BAMPFA’s film and video collections. Oversees adherence to national professional cataloging standards and works with national and international professional organizations to design and implement improved and enhanced standards.
  • Serves on the Affiliated Libraries Administrative Group (TALAG). Collaborates with University Library IT to provide seamless access to BAMPFA catalog records in shared databases including OCLC/Worldcat, Oskicat, and Melvyl.
  • Continues development of CineFiles, BAMPFA’s film-related document database, in collaboration with campus Research IT department. Manages ongoing and new initiatives to improve intellectual control and access to collections, including evaluating and selecting softwares and systems.
  • Has general responsibility for institution-wide digital asset management and preservation (for digitized images of artworks, art exhibitions, events, film stills, digital audio, and digital media). Oversees vendor and open-source systems used to manage these assets such as Piction and ResourceSpace. Periodically convenes institution-wide Digital Resources Task Force; updates Digital Resources Management Plan. Supervises Digital Asset Manager and coordinates with film collection, IT, and digital media staff to refine procedures and implement projects. Determines digital asset storage media and licensing needs for each budget cycle, including support contracts, and ensures that adequate funding is budgeted.
  • Contributes to national and international professional scholarship and standards development in the fields of information studies, film archiving, and librarianship. May prepare and present brief courses, seminars, and lectures for UCB and other graduate and undergraduate courses.

    Required Qualifications 

  • Expertise in library services including collection development, cataloging, archival processing, and providing reference and instruction.
  • Expertise in library and archival best practices and standards.
  • Detail-oriented with strong management, supervisory, problem-solving, and organizational leadership skills.
  • Resource management, project management, and grant writing skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of film history.
  • Knowledge of copyright law and of legal and ethical standards of film archiving.
  • Knowledge of national cataloging practices and systems (e.g., MARC, OCLC, RDA, integrated library systems)
  • Ability to research, select, and coordinate implementation of complex data and asset management systems.
  • Experience with digitization processes and digital preservation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing highly responsive public service.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.

Education/training

Degrees in archival studies, library and information studies, or film and media studies and/or equivalent experience/training.
