Berkeley, CA, March 13, 2014-The UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA) will hold its annual Gala & Auction on May 6, 2014. The event will be the final gala hosted in the Bancroft Way building before BAM/PFA moves to a state-of-the-art facility in downtown Berkeley (expected to open in early 2016). This year's gala, with the theme Honor the Past-Celebrate the Future, brings together several longtime supporters of BAM/PFA and of the Bay Area art community-Jacquelynn Baas, Rena Bransten, Jane Green, Mary Robinson, Peter Selz, Barclay Simpson, and Roselyne Swig-as Honorary Co-Chairs. The evening will culminate in a live auction featuring works by artists prominently featured in BAM/PFA's renowned collection and exhibition program, as well as a performance by internationally acclaimed pianist, composer, and L@TE: Friday Nights @ BAM/PFA guest programmer Sarah Cahill.

“We look forward to toasting to over forty years of memories in this space and to making new ones in our beautiful new home,” says BAM/PFA Director Lawrence Rinder. “To have so many artists, supporters, and others who have made such an extraordinary impact on BAM/PFA's history on hand will make this a truly special occasion.”

Co-chaired by Wanda Kownacki and Noel Nellis, with Robert Harshorn Shimshak serving as auction chair, the BAM/PFA Gala & Auction will include both a live auction sponsored by Christie's as well as an online auction hosted by Paddle 8, featuring one-of-a-kind works by over fifty artists from around the world. The online auction preview will be available at www.paddle8.com starting on April 8, and online bidding will open on April 22. Featured artists include Zarouhie Abdalian, Douglas Ashford, Richard Barnes, Taha Belal, Andrea Bowers, Mike Brodie, Todd Bura, Jim Campbell, Squeak Carnwath, Ajit Chauhan, James Chronister, Travis Collinson, Bruce Conner, N. Dash, Nicole Eisenman, Paz Errázuriz, Tony Feher, Amy Franceschini, Liam Gillick, Jim Goldberg, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Desiree Holman, Xylor Jane, Paul Kos, Tom Marioni, Barry McGee, Dave Muller, Ron Nagle, Silke Otto-Knapp, Gay Outlaw, Kamau Amu Patton, Laura Paulini, Martin Puryear, Lucy Raven, Rigo 23, Ed Ruscha, Christopher Ryan Russell, Wilhelm Sasnal, Dean Smith, Al Souza, Linda Stark, Hadi Tabatabai, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Leo Villareal, Catherine Wagner, David Wilson, and John Zurier. A selection of the artworks offered online will be included in the live auction on May 6.

Sarah Cahill, who has been described as “fiercely gifted” by the New York Times and “as tenacious and committed an advocate as any composer could dream of” by the San Francisco Chronicle, has established a distinguished career as a pianist and composer. Composers who have dedicated works to her include John Adams, Terry Riley, Frederic Rzewski, Pauline Oliveros, Annea Lockwood, and Evan Ziporyn; she has premiered pieces by Lou Harrison, Julia Wolfe, Ingram Marshall, Toshi Ichiyanagi, George Lewis, Leo Ornstein, and many others. In addition to her musical work, Cahill is a guest programmer for the BAM/PFA Friday night performance series L@TE. Cahill programmed the first L@TE event, a performance by Terry Riley in 2009. Since then she has arranged concerts by countless other new-music luminaries, including Paul Dresher, Ellen Goodman, Joan Jeanrenaud, The Residents, and William Winant, to name only a few.
