Animation! Speaking with the Makers

In this hybrid series, shown in-theater and via BAMPFA’s streaming platform, we interview filmmakers who specialize in animation and ask them to discuss how they develop their stylistic approaches, and how they distill time, gesture, and mood, frame by frame, into the basic unit of animation.

  • Janie Geiser: Mysteries and Unearthed Histories

    Janie Geiser’s films are influenced by surrealism, psychology, art history, design, and Americana, and they reveal a unique and accomplished vision. Her interview sheds light on how she approaches collage animation to create imaginary worlds that explore memory, language, and identity.

    Presented with a prerecorded interview with the filmmaker.

    This program features a selection of Lawrence Jordan’s experimental cut-out animation, including two of his best-known films, Duo Concertantes and Our Lady of the Sphere, that reveal the influence of surrealism on his aesthetic. Jordan’s interview addresses his collaborations with American artist Joseph Cornell.

    Canadian animators Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis create story-based animated films that exhibit an extraordinary ability to depict life’s tender moments. Their interview sheds light on how they conceive story ideas and work creatively with drawing, painting, computer applications, and sound.
