When leading Danish avant-garde filmmaker Jorgen Leth appeared in person at the PFA in July with A Sunday in Hell, a hit with bicycle-race and cinema enthusiasts alike, many viewers were turned away due to sell-out crowds. We are pleased to screen A Sunday in Hell again, along with Leth's first bicycle-race saga, the imaginative The Stars and the Water Carriers. Leth has made some 20 films which range from documentary to fiction, and which have shown to wide acclaim in major European film festivals. A poet, journalist, playwright, and sportsman, he approaches filmmaking with a sense of experimentation born of his own intense curiosity about his subjects, leading one Berlin critic to comment, “Jorgen Leth is a very strange man. He's like a stranger from outer space who comes down here to register life...with open eyes.
