Jon Bang Carlsen had achieved a reputation as a documentarist “noted for his fine artistic feeling and technical originality” (Variety) before making his first feature, Next Stop Paradise, in 1980. Hotel of the Stars was featured at Los Angeles' Filmex '82, and showed at Cannes in 1981.
