"Wieland insists on the necessity for the real feminine voice to be heard, not the female voice which reiterates male discourse, but rather a feminine voice that is born out of her traditional environment-the domestic. In Wieland's work we find a parallel tendency-that of establishing a dichotomy between an outside reality (society) and an inside reality (the personal unconscious, the feminine).-Lianne M. McLarty, Cine-TractsJoyce Wieland's death in June 1998 at the age of 66 caused many to reflect on her career as one of Canada's foremost artists, a visionary who consistently explored new styles and approaches in her paintings, drawings, watercolors, mixed-media constructions, quilts, and films. Her unique handling of themes such as nationalism, feminism, environmentalism, and spirituality took wondrous shape in the works she produced during a career of more than thirty years. Joyce Wieland's art celebrated the personal and the political in a way that was radical, witty, sensual, intimate, and soulful.-Susan Oxtoby, Cinematheque Ontario Organized by Cinematheque Ontario, with thanks to Susan Oxtoby and Andréa Picard, in cooperation with Canadian Filmmakers' Distribution Centre.
