When Douglas Sirk left Nazi Germany in 1937 (to begin a new career as an unknown in Hollywood), he had already established himself at age 37 as a leading director in the German film industry with nine feature films made for UFA in the two previous years, “...rather downbeat stories of dreams that are frustrated, vacillating characters who fail to achieve their aims, impossible loves. He was highly skilled at setting these stories in lavish and complacent surroundings, lulling the suspicions of conventional producers - and much of his audience.” -British Film Institute.
Tonight and Friday, July 18, we are showing four of Sirk's films made for UFA, films rarely seen even in Sirk retrospectives today.
