Agust Gundmundsson's films have put the Icelandic cinema on the map-both outside of and within Iceland; Land and Sons, by far the most popular film from any country in Iceland, is estimated to have been seen by over half the country's population. Locally, it has shown at Los Angeles' Filmex `81. Gudmundsson has been compared with Olmi and Bergman for his sensitive portrayals of the everyday lives of the Icelandic people, and for his powerful, schematic use of landscape. Gudmundsson studied at Iceland's National Film School. Land and Sons (1980) is his first feature film; The Outlaw, his second, has just been completed and has its West Coast premiere tonight.
