Milos Forman, while shooting Amadeus on location in his native Czechoslovakia, was delighted to discover several dozen sophisticated new animated films; our program represents his personal selection of the best new works. These films work on two levels, with charming animation that appeals to young viewers, and an underlying sense of satire for adults. They range from a wonderfully macabre interpretation of a Poe classic, The Fall of the House of Usher, to the graceful surrealism of Heads and a wildly satiric play on film conventions in The Extinct World of Gloves. The elegant classicism of traditional Czech puppet animation is evident in The King and the Goblin.
