Hollywood's self-censoring Production Code was instigated in 1930 by the “Hays Office"--the Motion Picture Distributors of America. By 1934, Shirley Temple had replaced Temple Drake, but in those early years, Hollywood still thumbed its nose at the Code with films like these:
