Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira was 70 years old when his 1978 masterpiece Doomed Love brought him success abroad, drawing critical comparisons with the work of Bresson and Dreyer in its uncompromising and rigorous aesthetic. The belated discovery of Portugal's foremost stylist led to international interest in his career--a sparse but precious collection of six features and several short films made over a 50-year span. Recent PFA programs of Portuguese films have included, in addition to Doomed Love, his 1981 Francisca as well as his “neorealist” first feature Aniki-Bobo (1942).
