Korea's Last Pyonsa Silent Film Narrator
KIMA (Korea Studies in Media Arts) presents the second KIMA Korean Film Festival, September 6 through 8 in Wheeler Auditorium and 142 Dwinelle Hall on the UC Berkeley campus. Pyonsa artist (Korean silent film narrator) Shin Chul, the only pyonsa still practicing this tradition, will perform The Public Prosecutor and the Teacher (Tae-ryong Yoon, Korea, 1948, Silent, 38 mins) during the festival on September 7 at 7 p.m. in Wheeler Auditorium; and again in the PFA Theater on Saturday, September 14 at 2 p.m. The only Korean silent film known to survive, the film tells the story of a poor woman who helps put a student through law school, only to later face him as a magistrate when she is accused of murder.
