Francesco Rosi is one of the leading figures of contemporary Italian filmmaking, though many of his landmark films - like Salvatore Giuliano and Lucky Luciano - were so badly mangled by American distributors that they have yet to receive their proper recognition from U.S. audiences. His work during the past decade has included some of his most powerful films: The Mattei Affair (1972), Illustrious Corpses (1976), Eboli (1979) and his most recent film, the moving Three Brothers, which will receive its West Coast Premiere October 17 at the San Francisco International Film Festival.
