James Whale (born 1896) left England in 1929 for Hollywood, where he became Universal's specialist in the horror genre. Despite weak scenarios, he realized four classic fantasy films between 1931 and 1935: Frankenstein, The Old Dark House, The Invisible Man, and The Bride Of Frankenstein. All show a remarkable utilization of decor, fine narrative rhythm, excellent direction of actors, and a cultivated sense of (British) humor.
Apart from these he made several elegant melodramas, including Remember Last Night (1935) and the musical romance, Showboat (1936).
