Cézanne: Conversation with Joachim Gasquet
(Cézanne: Dialogue avec Joachim Gasquet)
Drawing from Joachim Gasquet’s 1921 memoir of the painter Paul Cézanne, Straub and Huillet pay fitting tribute to the French master they greatly admired. Excerpts from the memoir are blended with photographs of Cézanne, clips from Jean Renoir’s Madame Bovary, and scenes of Mont Sainte-Victoire, where the artist made his home and about which he noted, “Look at this mountain: it was once fire”—a phrase Straub and Huillet often quoted.

A Visit to the Louvre
(Une visite au Louvre)
Jean-Marie Straub, Danièle Huillet, France, Germany, 2004
Also drawing on Joachim Gasquet’s memoir of Cézanne, a trip through the Louvre inspires the painter's sometimes withering, sometimes loving, always fierce discussion of paintings by Ingres, Delacroix, Courbet, Tintoretto, and others.
