For her last film, Kira Muratova gathered a who’s who of Russian film and stage actors for this tribute to (or dismantling of) the very concepts of performance, and storytelling. We begin conventionally (already a red flag, for those familiar with Muratova) with a conversational scene between a man and a woman; suddenly, it’s abandoned, to then be repeated by other actors, in another setting entirely. And, suddenly, it switches again. Only the words remain, repeated by new faces, in wildly different settings, with a bizarre variety of new line readings. Cuts to bemused potential film funders remind us that, in cinema, the places and faces may change, but the lines eternally remain.
