Yasujiro Ozu’s 1959 color remake of his 1934 film follows a theater troupe that arrives in a remote island town to visit lead actor Komajuro’s former mistress and illegitimate son. The narrative unfolds as Komajuro attempts to balance his responsibilities as a father to his adult son, Kiyoshi—now working as a postal clerk and oblivious to Komajuro’s true identity—with his current relationship with Sumiko, the troupe’s lead actress. Color cinematography by Kazuo Miyagawa, replacing Ozu’s longtime collaborator Yuharu Atsuta, underscores the themes of artistic anachronism in Ozu’s film, which Cha noted as an influence.
