Illusion Travels by Streetcar

Gorgeously photographed by Raúl Martínez Solares, Illusion Travels by Streetcar is in many ways Luis Buñuel’s most visually intoxicating creation.

When their beloved streetcar is decommissioned, two tipsy transit workers decide to take it out for one last late-night spin, awakening the morning after still in possession of the vehicle. A road movie confined to the rails becomes a picaresque portrait of Mexico City as the duo attempts the impossible—to evade attention returning the car to the depot, while being compelled to take on passengers along the route. Skewering technocrats, bureaucrats, and snoops, the film is a hilarious celebration of Buñuel’s chosen city and its inhabitants.
