The Korean composer Isang Yun uniquely synthesized Western classical and avant-garde music with Eastern traditions. His life story is equally distinctive. Today he is claimed by Germany, where he lived in exile; South Korea, where he was born and later tried as a traitor; and North Korea, which he visited in his efforts to reunite his country.
