I chose Stranger Inside because it was a radical act—to center Black queer women behind bars, on their own terms. It’s raw, real, and remains one of my boldest statements on chosen family and survival.

This terrific, rarely seen women’s prison drama from Cheryl Dunye stars Yolonda Ross (Whitney, The Chi) as a tough, young butch named Treasure seeking out her long-lost lifer mother in a maximum security lockup. This suspenseful, gritty drama thoughtfully grapples with the complex racial dynamics of a diverse array of incarcerated women. Like the Netflix series it predated by more than a decade (Orange Is the New Black), a massive amount of lesbian drama takes center stage.
