From the 1st to the 13th of October, four French video artists will visit the Berkeley campus. During the first week of their stay, each artist will work on a short video production in collaboration with the UC Television Office. The second week, from October 6 to 11, a selection of their video installation work will be presented to the public from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. in room 117 Dwinelle Hall. Their videotapes will be screened on October 5 and 12 in the Sunday Video Screening series.
The selection of tapes which make up this exhibition entitled “Video about Video,” brings together works which “systematically explore one (or several) of the fundamental parameters associated with electronic images.... By moving back and forth from signal to meaning, the spectator is confronted with this reflection about video, a reflection which is not pure rationality, nor of the pure logic of the secondary process. It is also a logic of associations, logic of the network that the work organizes and that it can make its own.
“There is another factor in the bringing together of these works. The artists grouped together here come into the videographic field from extremely diverse if not from very distant horizons and origins: Paul Armand Gette was trained as a biologist, Philippe Guerrier was originally an architect, Thierry Kuntzel is an image theoretician, Philippe Oudard is a photographer.” -Jean Paul Simon.
During their stay they will hold informal discussions, to be presented by Jean-Paul Simon. Time and place of these meetings can be obtained by calling 642-2712. A catalogue for this program will be available at the Sunday screenings and in the Museum Bookstore.
