Pina Bausch’s unexpected death shortly before shooting began made her long-planned collaboration with Wim Wenders impossible, but eventually Wenders and the Tanztheater Wuppertal decided to go ahead with the film “for Pina” instead of with her. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary and frequently cited as one of the best dance movies—and 3-D movies—ever made, Pina introduced the legendary choreographer to a large general audience. Shot on locations in and around Wuppertal, some of the staging recalls sequences from Bausch’s earlier Complaint of an Empress. The dancing is exuberant and electrifying, especially on the big screen.
