With his most recent film, Rithy Panh (The Missing Picture) turns from documenting the Cambodian genocide to poetically reflecting on the search for peace and healing after tragic loss. Having lost the majority of his family under the Khmer Rouge, Panh engages in a series of rituals—with Buddhist monks and village mediums, using masks, totemic figures, or photographs—to help lay his relatives’ wandering souls to rest. His meditative voiceover is supplemented by interviews with two other survivors who detail the horrors of the reeducation camps where the filmmaker’s uprooted family perished. The resulting film is “at once emotionally overwhelming, visually ravishing, and intellectually stimulating” (Hollywood Reporter).
