In a moment when the news can be overwhelming, the Five Tables curators return to artists whose works interrogate, subvert, and find promise in nontraditional conceptions of “news.” The presentation includes artist communication via mail art (intimate news); collage work assembled through newspaper clippings (news as material); print works that incite and demand societal transformation (social change news); moments captured from interior worlds (staying-at-home news); and instances of fake news and the media’s shortcomings (propaganda news).

Elizabeth Fair, Angela Pastorelli-Sosa, and Delphine Sims are currently enrolled in the graduate seminar From Democracy to Decolonization: The History and Futures of Museums; this Five Tables program is an outgrowth of their research in this course. In making their selections, they took inspiration from the 1992 poster series collaboratively produced by BAMPFA’s MATRIX Program and Heyday Press’s unique quarterly magazine News from Native California, devoted to Native Californians and their stories.
