Race, Community Engagement, and Time-based Art: Chris Johnson

Join a discussion with artist Chris Johnson about issues of race and community engagement in time-based art, as well as his ongoing project Question Bridge: Black Males

Johnson is a photographic and video artist, curator, and writer who currently serves as chair and professor of photography at California College of the Arts. He was previously president of SF Camerawork, director of the Mother Jones International Fund for Documentary Photography, and chair of the City of Oakland’s Cultural Affairs Commission. He recently received a grant for a collaborative work with Hank Willis Thomas titled Question Bridge: Black Males,a transmedia project that seeks to represent and redefine Black male identity in America. 

Smith is an interdisciplinary artist whose work reflects upon the everyday possibilities of the imagination, rooted within the discourse of mid-twentieth-century experimental film. She serves as faculty for the Vermont College of Fine Arts low-residency MFA program.
