Turkish Delight (lokum in Turkish) follows the iconic sweet, from Western Anatolia to Syros Island in Greece. Pinar Öğrenci films lokum’s production while exploring its history and links to nationalism, war, and migration. Produced in collaboration with architect and academic Esra Akcan—based on her book Open Architecture, about International Bauausstellung, the postwar urban renewal project carried out in the district of Kreuzberg, Berlin, between 1984 and 1987—Gurbet Is a Home Now reunites photographs from the time with their subjects, “guest workers” and their children, who reflect on their experience growing up there.
