Fabrics inherited from family members or given by friends can inspire the creation of a new quilt. This was true for many quiltmakers in Routed West: Twentieth-Century African American Quilts in California. After looking at some quilts in the exhibition that were made from recycled materials, create a unique quilt square made from pieces you bring with you that have personal meaning for you and/or from the selection of denim, other cotton fabrics, polyester, silk, and more that will be supplied for the workshop.

About Mary Lawrence

After studying graphic design at the San Francisco Art Institute, Mary Lawrence developed a unique practice in fire art, using alcohol-based inks activated with fire to create abstract art on nonflammable surfaces. She also teaches art classes in a range of media to children and families throughout the Bay Area. As an arts educator, she works for the Museum of Children’s Art, teaching at Sankofa United, and runs an independent Art Club project at many local schools. Her favorite artist is Jean-Michel Basquiat.
