Berlin Exiles, continuing through October 4, is presented in conjunction with the University Art Museum's exhibition, Josef Fenneker: Cinema Posters from Berlin. Much of the artistry in these films--which date from 1916 to 1933--was accomplished by artists (directors, actors, writers, cinematographers and composers) who later worked in exile, many in the U.S. In the credits for the following film notes, these artists are indicated with “(ex)” and their new names, where applicable, also noted in parentheses.
Berlin Exiles is presented in cooperation with the Goethe Institute, San Francisco, and was curated and organized by Gero Gandert, Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek, Berlin. PFA wishes to thank Deborah Griggs at the Goethe Institute for the extensive research and translations from which the series film notes are taken.
