Stanley Cavell is a Professor of Philosophy at Harvard University whose books include “The World Viewed: Reflections on the Ontology of Film” and “Pursuits of Happiness: The Hollywood Comedy of Remarriage.” In “Pursuits of Happiness,” Cavell coins a new genre--“the comedy of remarriage"--in which he includes seven comedies from the Thirties: The Lady Eve, It Happened One Night, Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, His Girl Friday, Adam's Rib and The Awful Truth. In choosing The Marquise of O... to accompany Adam's Rib on tonight's program, Mr. Cavell notes that he does not intend to absorb Rohmer's film into the genre, but to use it to reflect on and teach us more about the “comedy of remarriage.”
Stanley Cavell will speak on both films before Adam's Rib, and will entertain questions from the audience after Adam's Rib.
