We are delighted to present a new series of films preserved by the UCLA Film and Television Archive. UCLA's stellar reputation for film and television preservation is known by the film industry and by lovers of classic film around the world. This summer, the UCLA Archive presented its Tenth Festival of Preservation. Robert Gitt, Preservation Officer, who will introduce programs on three consecutive evenings, notes, "We are proud to present a broader range of films than ever before. Thanks to support from the Ahmanson Foundation in association with Sundance Institute, the Archive has now expanded its preservation of independent features and documentaries, exemplified by Charles Burnett's Killer of Sheep (1977) and Robert Epstein's Academy Award-winning documentary The Times of Harvey Milk (1984). Other highlights of the series include Molly O' (1921), starring the great silent comedienne Mabel Normand and long considered lost, presented in a restored version; the 1927 John Barrymore adventure-romance When a Man Loves, a Vitaphone film presented for the first time in seventy years with its original musical score; and The Power and the Glory, considered a precurser to Citizen Kane, now with the music and all of the missing sequences restored. Special events include an absorbing selection of newsreels on California history; restored classic cartoons; and, on March 17, a celebration of the career of director Budd Boetticher, who will be our guest."All prints are from UCLA Film and Television Archive. Program notes are excerpted from the catalog UCLA Film Archive Tenth Festival of Preservation, edited by Andrea Alsberg and Cheng-Sim Lim, and from other UCLA publications. Special thanks to Robert Gitt, Blaine Bartell, Jere Guldin, Rob Stone, and Cheng-Sim Lim for their assistance and advice in curating this series. We are grateful for the generous cooperation of Mr. and Mrs. Budd Boetticher; Charles Burnett; Rob Epstein; Suzanne Lloyd Hayes, Harold Lloyd Estate; and Michael Wayne, Batjac.
