Twenty-five years ago, only an isolated few women were making independent films. At that time, the struggle to produce meaningful works was matched only by the next hurdle, finding distribution. As an affirmation of works by and about women, a distribution group was formed in 1972, using the then novel name Women Make Movies. Still the leading distributor of films and tapes by women, WMM maintains a prestigious catalog representing an enormous diversity of makers, subjects, and styles. Autobiographical shorts, feature films, experimental narratives, and topical documentaries address overlooked and under-represented communities, whether they be expressions of ethnicity, sexual preference, or aesthetic leaning. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of Women Make Movies, PFA presents three evenings of recent works on October 15, 22, and 29, with a special appearance by WMM's Executive Director Debra Zimmerman on the 22nd.-Steve Seid Wednesday October 15, 1997
