Artist’s Talk: Gauri Gill

In this recorded talk in conjunction with the exhibition When All That Is Solid Melts into Air, New Delhi–based photographer Gauri Gill addresses her practice and how it has evolved over the recent past, as well as its formative roots. She speaks about various collaborative projects, including Fields of Sight—represented in the exhibition by the work A Seed’s Journey (2019)—and her ongoing engagement with the so-called “other,” including her work in rural India since 1999.

Gill’s projects highlight her belief in collaboration and in using photography as a memory practice. Her work addresses the twinned Indian identity marks of caste, class, and community as determinants of mobility and social behavior; it is marked by empathy, surprise, and concern over issues of survival.
