Curator’s Talk: Lucinda Barnes on Hans Hofmann

BAMPFA Curator Emerita Lucinda Barnes, a preeminent expert on Hans Hofmann, offers a walk-through of the new, major retrospective of the artist’s work. In her talk, the exhibition's curator highlights connections between Hofmann’s most iconic late-career paintings and some remarkable and prescient works from the 1930s and ’40s. Among the works she will discuss are Effervescence (1944), Cataclysm (1945), The Vanquished (1959), and In the Wake of the Hurricane (1960).

In addition to organizing several thematic exhibitions of Hofmann’s work, as chief curator and director of programs and collections Barnes curated and co-curated more than forty exhibitions for BAMPFA, including Measure of Time, American Wonder: Folk Art from the Collection, Human/Nature: Artists Respond to a Changing Planet, and Indeterminate Stillness: Looking at Whistler.
