In conjunction with BAMPFA’s streaming presentation of Irmi, join us for a live conversation and Q&A with directors Veronica Selver and Susan Fanshel and the composer of the score, Todd Boekelheide.

Selver is a Bay Area filmmaker who has specialized in social issue documentaries. Her own films include KPFA on the Air, Raising the Roof, and Cape Song. Films she codirected and coedited include You Got to Move, First Look, and duPont-Columbia Award–winner Word Is Out. Selected editing credits include On Company Business, winner of the FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlin Film Festival; Berkeley in the Sixties, an Academy Award nominee and American Cinema Editors nominee for best edited documentary; duPont-Columbia Award–winner Harry Bridges: A Man and His Union; IDA Documentary Award–winner Absolutely Positive; Peabody Award–winner Coming Out Under Fire; and Blacks and Jews. Selver was also an editor on Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin and A Fierce Green Fire, and creative consultant on Regarding Susan Sontag and Free for All.

Fanshel is an independent documentary filmmaker and editor whose award-winning films include A Weave of Time: The Story of a Navajo Family, Nevelson in Process, Voulkos and Company, Made in the Bronx, Six American Families: The Kennedys of New Mexico, and The Odyssey Tapes. The films she has edited have received the highest honors in broadcast journalism, including three Peabody Awards, two duPont-Columbia Awards, two Emmy Awards, the John E. O’Connor Film Award, and a Banff World Media Festival award. Selected editing credits include Robert Capa in Love and War, Innocence Lost: The Plea, Saving Elian, Hawaii’s Last Queen, and a four-part series for PBS about Franklin D. Roosevelt. Fanshel began her career in the Bay Area after graduating from UC Berkeley with a master of fine arts degree, and she currently resides in New York City.

Having edited picture and sound, and mixed numerous award-winning films, Boekelheide brings a wealth of experience and sensitivity to his scoring work. Above all, he strives to make each score feel like it couldn’t have been composed for any other film. He has earned an Academy Award, an Emmy, and numerous other awards and nominations, and he has worked with such filmmakers as Carroll Ballard, Bill Couturié, Jon Else, David Fincher, Milos Forman, Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine, Philip Kaufman, David Lynch, David Peoples, Lourdes Portillo, James Redford, Kristine Samuelson and John Haptas, and Peter Weir, among many others.
