Moderated by guest curator Karen Moss, this symposium reassessing the importance and impact of Alison Knowles’s work features art historians Hannah B. Higgins and Nicole L. Woods, and artist/educator/writer Simon Leung. Following Moss’s introduction, Higgins and Woods each elaborate on their essays for the Knowles exhibition publication, while Leung reflects on the interdisciplinary and intermedial nature of Knowles’s practice. 

Moss, professor of critical studies at the Roski School of Art and Design at the University of Southern California, previously worked with Knowles on exhibitions at the Walker Art Center and San Francisco Art Institute. Among her notable curatorial projects are Talking to Action: Art, Pedagogy and Activism and State of Mind: New Art from California Circa 1970.

Woods, assistant professor in the Department of Art, Art History & Design at the University of Notre Dame, is author of the forthcoming book Performing Chance: The Art of Alison Knowles In/Out of Fluxus, the first monograph on the life and art of Knowles.

Higgins, university professor in the School of Art and Art History at the University of Illinois, Chicago, where she has taught since 1994, is author of Fluxus Experience and The Grid Book.

Leung, professor and chair of Graduate Studies in Studio Art at UC Irvine, is a scholar and artist whose work has been shown internationally since the 1980s. He recently published “Squatting Towards Hong Kong” in October magazine.
