LIVESTREAM: Roberta Smith and Lawrence Rinder on Rosie Lee Tompkins

Join New York Times co-chief art critic Roberta Smith and BAMPFA Director Emeritus Lawrence Rinder for a lively and searching conversation about the art of Rosie Lee Tompkins.

Smith has authored many essays for catalogs and monographs on contemporary art, as well as decorative arts, popular and outsider art, design, and architecture. In 2003 she received the College Art Association’s Frank Jewett Mather Award for Art Criticism, and in 2019, the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award from the Dorothea & Leo Rabkin Foundation.

Rinder is cocurator, with Elaine Y. Yau, of Rosie Lee Tompkins: A Retrospective, and author of the exhibition catalog essay “Rosie Lee Tompkins: Music, Metaphor, and Motion.” In 1997 he organized MATRIX 173: Rosie Lee Tompkins, the artist’s first solo museum exhibition, at BAMPFA. Rinder served previously as dean of the college at the California College of the Arts and as the Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Curator of Contemporary Art at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Elaine Y. Yau, BAMPFA’s Associate Curator for the Eli Leon Living Trust Collection of African American Quilts, will moderate the discussion.
