M*A*S*H

The original adventures of Hawkeye Pierce, Duke Forrest and Trapper John McIntyre in the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in Korea. M*A*S*H has been hailed as "the great anti-everything film." It put Robert Altman's name--and some of the rudiments of his quirky methods--on the map. A recent British reassessment of the film at the National Film Theatre notes: "Although set in Korea, M*A*S*H is basically Bilko in Vietnam, in which the coarsely funny antics of an army medical unit are counterpointed--even justified--by the brutalities of the surrounding war. Its style is a portent for the decade: a comedy that assaults rather than soothes the senses and whose visual and verbal panache subsumes structure and taste."
