Join us for a live conversation with Gregory Zinman, author of Making Images Move: Handmade Cinema and the Other Arts, and filmmakers Lynn Marie Kirby, Kerry Laitala, Greta Snider, and Jennifer West. Gregory Zinman’s recent book Making Images Move: Handmade Cinema and the Other Arts explores the world of artists who create moving image work without using photographic processes, instead directly scratching or painting on celluloid or deteriorating it with bleach or through organic processes. For this program, he presents a recorded lecture along with a selection of works, largely abstract, that trace this alternative history. As he relates, “While the goal of elevating or transcending abstract painting remains evident in many of the works to be screened, their diverging concerns extend into a variety of other arenas—Brakhage’s engagement with literature, Uman’s feminist erotics, Nishikawa’s ecological ruminations—demonstrating the many ways that handmade cinema acts as counter-cinema, in concept, material, and execution.”
