Creativity: A New Approach—Series Introduction by Stan Lai

Join us for the opening lecture of the spring 2019 Arts + Design Thursdays series, which is shaped around three key concepts: creativity, migration, and transformation.

Series cocurator Stan Lai is an acclaimed playwright and director known for creating some of the most memorable works of the contemporary Chinese stage, and for his invention of bold new genres and innovative staging. His theories on creativity are considered groundbreaking in the field. Lai is artistic director of Performance Workshop in Taiwan and festival artistic director of China’s Wuzhen Theatre. His works include more than thirty original plays, among them the epic A Dream Like a Dream and Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land; two feature films; and four operas. Born in the United States and based in Taiwan, Lai received a doctorate in dramatic art from UC Berkeley.
